Every student should sign up for classes. For RP purposes, you are not required to RP in class or do assignments for teachers, but those could get you house points. You are, however, required to have your character sign up for classes just so everyone knows what classes your character has in common with theirs. All characters years 1-2 are limited to taking the core classes. Third years are allowed to drop astronomy (optional) and add up to three classes (two if you are keeping Astronomy). After fifth year, the classes are based on the student's desired career, but they must take at least 5 classes. The Apparition class is required for anyone of age and is added to the student's current class load.
To sign up, just reply with your character's name and the courses s/he is taking.
